What do Dutch air scouts do?

Scouting exists in most countries of the world. Some countries only have land scouts; others also have sea and air scouts. In the Netherlands, all three types of scouting are present. Today we inform you about air scouting.

"We do all activities that normal scouts also do. Except that our activities always have something to do with flying or airplanes. We also make wooden airplanes with our cub scouts from 'Balsa' wood, about 10 to 15 cm wide, and the biggest ones are one, maybe two meters wide." In the Netherlands there are about 11 airscout groups. Every group has its own and different interpretation of air scouting. At the JubJam100 you can get to know a little more about the activities of air scouts by participating in the ticket activity In2theAir.

"Every year we go to an airfield to watch airplanes and do activities there." For instance at the In2theAir-field, you can see a circle in which line controlled model planes are flown. The planes have a line with a handle attached to them, which keeps it in the circle. A small motor powers the model in flight, but always in a circle around you. With the handle you can steer the plane to go up and down. The hardest thing to do though is letting the plane fly in a straight line. Besides flying with line controlled model planes, you can fly kites or play with a bottle rocket. You can create such a rocket out of a soda bottle, which you fill with water and pump air into. The air pressure inside will increase until the cap pops off and your bottle rocket is launched. Again, another way of getting into the air. "We meet on Saturday or Sundays. We fly real airplanes and gliders. We also help at air shows. Our explorers are the marshalling and safety people. And for this, the pilots give us free flights in their aircrafts." Some groups actually fly during their summer camp: some in a little plane, others in a glider. That is the ultimate kick for Air Scouts and the truest way to get In2theAir!

"We do all kind of activities because we live near a river, and we also do land activities like pioneering. During the camp we try to go flying once in a while: in a little airplane or in a delta flyer."

Woensdagmiddag heeft de zeppelin van de luchtscouts uit Groot-Brittannië op het terrein van In2theair de eerste testvlucht gemaakt. Op de ene kant staat 'Challenge 100', aan de andere kant 'Scouts be prepared'. De zeppelin is door Engelse luchtscouts ontworpen en gebouwd. Air Scoutcoördinator Chris Shaw vertelt enthousiast over de werking van de zeppelin. Hij is hier samen met een groep van ongeveer zestig luchtscouts uit Groot-Brittannië aanwezig op de JubJam100.

Wanneer de zeppelin gevuld is, worden de propellers onder de sigaarvormige ballon gemonteerd. Helaas blijkt tijdens het testen van de afstandsbediening dat de accu niet optimaal werkt. Er staat eigenlijk ook iets te veel wind voor de testvlucht. Maar dit mag de pret niet drukken. Met een touw aan de voor- en achterkant van de zeppelin is het luchtruim tien minuten het bezit van dit varende object. Chris zit vol verhalen en vertelt, nadat de zeppelin in de tent tegen het plafond is gestationeerd, dat er drie van deze zeppelins in omloop zijn. De Air Scouts doneren dit exemplaar aan Scouting Nederland ter ere van het 100-jarig bestaan. Chris nodigt alle luchtscouts uit om naar een groot kamp speciaal voor luchtscouts in Groot Brittannië te komen in de zomer van 2011.

Vandaag de 2e dag van het Ticket programma. Er zijn bij ons op het terrein bijna 500 kinderen bezig geweest, gisteren waren dit er ook al 750. Er zijn ongeveer 250 vliegers gemaakt, 500 raketten en 180 pandora's en ook nog eens 125 dwekkers (vliegtuigje voor dolfijnen welpen esta's en kabouters).
De kinderen vinden het fantastisch en komen ook 's avond graag terug om hun pandora te halen.
